My favorite bakery near my house in the Yokohama suburbs has a few tables outdoors and as soon as my wife and I sit down to eat a few sparrows appear from nowhere waiting to get a few crumbs. The braver ones even land on our table.

Can I show you my buttocks instead? I live in Mauritius, and there’s this beautiful songbird called the red-whiskered bulbul. I really like them, so much so that I’ve given them a nickname: ‘Cul Rouge’. (Their whiskers aren’t the only red thing on them, you see.)
